Ever since Jack Hoffman’s legendary 69-yard touchdown in 2013, Husker Football has been committed to supporting him in his fight against brain cancer. Jack lost that battle earlier this year, but the Team Jack Foundation’s partnership with the Huskers continues even after his death. On Sunday, July 20, Husker fans got the chance to mingle with the players as they ran in the annual Nebraska Football Road Race. The race has been happening for over a dozen years now, and each year, they donate 100% of the proceeds to pediatric brain cancer research at UNMC. In total, they’ve raised over $300,000.Husker team members are happy to support the cause. “I feel like this is a great way to just get some awareness out there. I think the more that we can spread awareness about it, the better our chances are trying to, you know, help our kids and families that are going through what they’re going through,” said Nebraska sophomore wide receiver Carter Nelson. The start and finish line for the fun run and the 5K were placed on the 31-yard line. That way, each runner gets the chance to finish the race with a 69-yard run, just like Jack did 12 years ago. “This is a special year because Jack passed away back in January. So, it’s pretty cool that they continue this tradition and, as long as they do it, we will be here supporting it,” said runner Troy Pfannenstiel. At this year’s race, 12-year-old Papillion native Liam Settles had a massive team of runners all racing for him. He’s been a pediatric brain cancer fighter since April 2024.Runners say getting to start and end the race in Memorial Stadium is an incredible experience, and raising money for kids like Liam is what keeps them coming back each year.
