Before the Jaguars first training camp practice, here is an early prediction of what the 53-man roster will look like.
With the Jacksonville Jaguars’ first training camp practice almost here, let’s take a swing at predicting what the final 53-man roster ends up looking like.
While OTAs and minicamp provided us with some additional insights, whether it be through individual performances, where players were lined up, or what units they were working with, the final roster decisions will be made based on what happens over the next several weeks.
So, to state the obvious, a lot can, and to some degree, probably will change. But given what we know right now, here is how the Jaguars’ 53-man roster could shake out.
Quarterback (2):Â Trevor Lawrence, Nick Mullens
The question here is whether the Jaguars roster two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man. For me, I’d prefer to see two with that roster spot, then utilized at another position where contributions on special teams can be made.
Running back (4): Travis Etienne, Tank Bigsby, Bhayshul Tuten, LeQuint Allen
Will the Jaguars keep four running backs? Most teams keep three because getting that many backs regular touches is a difficult task. In fact, the third back often doesn’t see much playing time, let alone a fourth. But, with that said, as of now, I think Jacksonville makes it work and doesn’t want to risk putting Allen on the practice squad where another team could claim him.
Wide receiver (5):Â Dyami Brown, Brian Thomas Jr., Parker Washington, Travis Hunter, Josh Cephus
With Hunter playing both ways, keeping six receivers for added depth makes a lot of sense. However, I couldn’t get the roster math to work out doing that. We know who the first four spots on the depth chart belong to, but for the fifth spot, I went with Cephus, who stood out during offseason programs.
Tight end (3):Â Johnny Mundt, Hunter Long, Brenton Strange
Another position where I went lighter, leaving off Quintin Morris. With Long and Mundt on the roster, the Jaguars have that blocking-first role covered. Also, with the ability to elevate players from the practice squad on Sundays, they can add more depth on game days if needed.
Offensive line (10):Â Walker Little, Ezra Cleveland, Robert Hainsey, Patrick Mekari, Anton Harrison, Chuma Edoga, Cole Van Lanen, Fred Johnson, Wyatt Milum, Jonah Monheim
The Jaguars are embracing competition on the offensive line this summer as they search for their best starting five configuration. When it comes to the final roster, I kept the six new additions GM James Gladstone made this offseason, Little, Cleveland, and Harrison, all of whom started last season, along with Van Lanen, who the team prioritized bringing back as a restricted free agent.
Defensive line (9):Â Josh Hines-Allen, Travon Walker, Dennis Gardeck, Dawuane Smoot, Arik Armstead, Maason Smith, DaVon Hamilton, Emmanuel Ogbah, Tyler Lacy
Gardeck, Smoot, and Ogbah all bolster the defensive end depth. At tackle, I went a little lighter with four, given that Walker or Smoot both could move inside during obvious passing situations. A Year 2 jump from Smith, along with Armstead being back at his natural position, can help the defensive tackle unit rebound in 2025.
Linebacker (6):Â Devin Lloyd, Foyesade Oluokun, Jalen McLeod, Ventrell Miller, Chad Muma, Jack Kiser
Do the Jaguars keep six linebackers? As of now, it’s difficult to decipher who might be the odd man out from this group. Lloyd and Oluokun are starting, Miller and Muma bring experience, while McLeod and Kiser are recent draft picks who can help on special teams as well.
Cornerback (5):Â Tyson Campbell, Jourdan Lewis, Jarrian Jones, Montaric Brown, De’Antre Prince
We know the first four players mentioned will be on the team. Hunter will also be a part of this position group as well. So that leaves one roster spot up for grabs, which at this time, we will give to Prince, a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
Safety (6):Â Eric Murray, Darnell Savage, Antonio Johnson, Caleb Ransaw, Rayuan Lane, Andrew Wingard
That’s a lot of safeties, but similar to linebacker, if the Jaguars are only going to keep five, I’m not sure who would be left off. Murray will be starting, while Savage, Johnson, Ransaw, and Wingard are competing for playing time. Lane, a draft pick by Gladstone, can provide immediate help on special teams.
Special teams (3):Â Logan Cooke, Ross Matiscik, Cam Little
No questions here.
