Young 49ers talent sees a frustrating start to his NFL career take another curious turn ahead of 2025 training camp originally appeared on A to Z Sports.

The frustrating start for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall’s career just experienced another bump in the road.

Now is not the time to panic by any means — but the 49ers placed their 2024 first-round draft choice on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list in advance of the team’s opening to training camp next week. Pearsall, who endured a hamstring injury in the spring and was held out of OTAs & minicamp, can be activated off of the list at any time. It is currently unclear whether Pearsall’s ailment is the same hamstring or something new.

Pearsall was among the 49ers’ six players placed on the PUP/active list for San Francisco, which keeps the door open for an activation at any point in time. Media availabilities should provide some more clarity on Pearsall’s individual timeline, but this is a prime season for the 2024 first-round draft choice to affirm San Francisco’s investment in him after a quiet rookie season.

Joining Pearsall on the PUP/active list is fellow wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is recovering from a season-ending injury in 2024. The other top receiver, Jauan Jennings, has asked for a re-worked contract or, alternatively, a trade.

It’s an ominous start for the 49ers pass catchers in their first season without Deebo Samuel, particularly given that Pearsall’s hamstring “”tweak” was nearly two months ago. If he’s still having lingering issues with his hamstring that have his condition or readiness to participate in question, it should at least offer some wariness by the team.

When head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about Pearsall’s status for minicamp at the end of OTA’s, he acknowledged that the 49ers would hold him out until camp but that they felt he could be ready to participate back then.

“He could be (ready for minicamp). But by the time you get to minicamp and there’s just two days left in school, we probably won’t just throw him out there. But he should be healthy by then,” said Shanahan.

More time will provide clarity on what exactly is going on with Pearsall. But for now, it’s yet another frustrating development for a talented player.
