The Los Angeles Rams have drafted masterfully on the defensive side of the ball in recent years, constructing one of the best front sevens in the league. Their edge rushers are particularly good, led by Jared Verse and Byron Young.
There are no concerns about the top of the depth chart at outside linebacker but the backups behind Verse and Young create some questions. Do the Rams have enough talent after those two top edge rushers after losing Michael Hoecht in free agency?

We broke down the position group into three categories, showing where everyone stands entering camp.
Roster locks
Verse, Young and Stewart are the only three edge rushers who are certain to make the team. No one else within this position group can be considered locks, which is where the concern creeps in. It’s reasonable to ask if the Rams have enough proven talent behind their starters, especially given how young everyone is.
On the bright side, there’s so much potential just with these three players that if everyone stays healthy, the Rams won’t need to dip too far down the depth chart.

Likely to make it
Jackson and Hampton should make the team as former fifth-round picks, but they have plenty to prove after playing sparingly up to this point. Jackson is a big, physical edge rusher who is better against the run than the pass, while Hampton hasn’t done enough with his limited opportunities; he brings good athleticism and burst to the table, though.
On the bubble
Pearcy and Muhammad are both undrafted rookies looking to carve out a role in training camp. Thomas is a returning veteran who has flashed plenty in the preseason but has never done much in the regular season when it counts.

Position battle to watch
OLB3: Stewart vs. Jackson vs. Hampton
It’s looking like a three-man race for the OLB3 spot, which was previously occupied by Michael Hoecht. It’s an important role that saw Hoecht play 57% of the defensive snaps last season as a rotational piece, subbing in for Verse and Young at times.
Potential sleeper
Jackson was limited by an injury last summer so it took him a little while to get off the ground, but he’s someone the Rams have been excited about. He has the size and length to be an NFL edge defender, but he needs to stay healthy and begin to show signs of being a productive pass rusher in a 3-4 scheme.
