Former Denver Broncos linebacker Josey Jewell is dealing with concussion issues, and that led the Carolina Panthers to release the veteran on Tuesday.

Jewell played the first six years of his career with the Broncos after being picked in the fourth-round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He departed for Carolina last offseason, signing a three-year contract worth nearly $19 million.

Unfortunately, for now, health issues are allowing Jewell to only complete one year of that deal.

However, in that story written by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com, there’s some hope Josey Jewell could be back with the team down the road. Gantt also provided some important details of what’s going on right now, including what appears to be a selfless move by Jewell:

According to a team spokesperson, the 30-year-old Jewell wanted to prioritize his health and recovery and be considerate of his teammates, and the move allows the Panthers to move forward with a group of players who are able to get all the practice reps when camp opens tomorrow.

If all goes well with his recovery, he could return to the team at some point in the future.

First and foremost, Broncos Country wishes Jewell the best in his recovery. Concussion troubles are both sad and scary. And he’s still got a long life ahead after football.

But the fact Jewell recognized this is what would be best for the Panthers right now is commendable. That’s a seriously unselfish thing to do, so kudos to him.

In a perfect world, his symptoms will start to get better and Jewell can re-sign with Carolina at some point.

In 78 career games with the Broncos, Jewell posted 453 tackles and nine sacks, mostly patrolling the middle of the football field. Denver’s new tandem at that position is now Alex Singleton and Dre Greenlaw, who was added this offseason.

Last year with the Panthers, Jewell played in 12 games and had 97 tackles and 3.5 sacks. His latest concussion happened in Week 16 against the Cardinals.

Here’s to hoping we see Josey Jewell back on an NFL field at some point, or if not, he’s at peace with how a very solid career played out.
