Veteran defensive tackle Grady Jarrett was signed this offseason to become an anchor for the Chicago Bears on the defensive line and as a leader, both on the field and in the locker room.

While there’s plenty of eyes on how Jarrett will help his defensive teammates in Montez Sweat, Dayo Odeyingbo, Gervon Dexter Sr., as well as the younger talent behind him, he’s also got a responsibility to help the offensive side of the ball.

Jarrett recently spoke about making life difficult for second-year quarterback Caleb Williams in an effort to get him prepared for opponents this season. He explained why he trash talks his teammate and why he feels it’s the right way to push him to strive to be the best version of himself.

“You know, encouraging words and stuff like that but also more than that, sometimes you got to talk a little mess to him,” Jarrett said. “Or challenge them and give him difficulties so by the time the game comes, nothing is going to faze him. It’s love but it’s like big brother love because you want the best for him, and he wants to do what’s best for him but we have to put a tough defense out there. Also in-between time we have to hang out, break bread, and I think he’s going to be more than ready to go.

“That’s everybody’s preparation and all hands on deck. Everybody wants to see him do his best, the talent he’s got is out of this world. I think he’d be the first one to tell you it comes with putting in the good work and that’s what I’ve been super impressed with being his teammate so far, how bought in he is, how committed he is to really try to achieve greatness. I can’t wait for the world to see it.”

Jarrett spent his first 10 seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and now has a fresh beginning with a young quarterback in Williams, a new defensive coordinator in Dennis Allen, and a franchise starving to get back to the playoffs.
