Kansas City Chiefs ramp things up in third Training Camp practice
(ST. JOSEPH, MO) –Â It was day three of the Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp on Missouri Western’s campus in St. Joseph as the team was starting to turn things up a notch.Â
“It’s been great to get out here, get these days in,” said head coach Andy Reid. “We’ve had three really good days of work where we get ones against ones, twos against twos, threes against threes, so there’s some competition there.”
There’s also competition at the Chiefs running back position with Kareem Hunt and a now healthy Isiah Pacheco for the starting spot. This is Hunt’s first training camp with Kansas City since his first stint with the team back in 2018. He’s hoping that being here for OTAs, training camp, and just being around this team longer will help his preparation for the season, rather than get signed a few games in like last year. Â
“It’s going to help me a lot, you know, tremendous,” said Hunt. “To be able to get a full offseason and be out here in these hot boy summer days, just being able to work with the team and eat healthy is a big advantage.”
The Chiefs offensive line has gone through a lot of changes. Free agent signee Jaylen Moore has been playing right tackle at camp with Jawaan Taylor on the PUP list. Former second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia is now the left guard, and first-round pick Josh Simmons has been in at left tackle in St. Joe. With so many new parts, center Creed Humphrey says this training camp will be key to build the group’s connection.
“I think just getting the chemistry down with the offensive line. That’s why camp’s really good for this,” said Humphrey. “You get a ton of reps in, a ton of looks against Spag’s defense. So it’s preparing you all for the season. So we’re excited about it. We’ve got some really good talent in that room right now, and it’s going to be a really good competition.”
On the defensive side, fourth-year linebacker Leo Chenal is going into the final year of his contract with the Chiefs. The former third-round pick from Wisconsin made some massive plays for KC as he got more playing time last season. Right now, Chenal’s not worried about his contract situation. He’s putting the team first.
“I try to keep my mind off it as best you can. That can become an unnecessary stress on yourself and on your shoulders,” said Chenal. “So I just look at still being selfless, doing what I can for the team, not trying to do too much. Still do my job and do what I can, but at the same time, growing and get better.”
The team will be back to practice on Friday, July 25th, have an off day on Saturday the 26th and then the pads come on for the first time on Sunday the 27th. Â
