After Thursday’s training camp practice, Anthony Campanile described how the Jaguars are balancing Travis Hunter’s schedule.
Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile doesn’t have any concerns about Travis Hunter splitting time between offense and defense.
For one, that comes from the confidence he has in Hunter, but head coach Liam Coen and all involved have done a great job of planning out Hunter’s practice and meeting schedule.
“I would say Liam’s done an unbelievable job with that,” Campanile said of Hunter’s schedule. “He is down to the second with all of that. It’s honestly impressive to watch. He does a great job of communicating with us, when he’s going to be with us, when he’s going to be meeting with us, when we’re going to have time on the field.
“And our coaches, coach Milus, coach Perkins, those guys have done a great job, and coach Lescari, in the meetings. They’ve done a great job of planning everything out with his meeting time and then having the stuff ready to go on the field so we can do feet meets and walk-and-talks with him in between if he’s available.”
Hunter has been in defensive meetings and learning the playbook since he arrived in Jacksonville. But up to this point, most of his time has come on offense. As Coen told The Athletic recently, that is where more work is needed right now with the fundamentals, technique, and everything else that comes with playing wide receiver.
But the next step in Hunter’s progression is routinely playing on offense and defense in the same practice. As Coen described on Wednesday, for roughly the first six training camp practices, Hunter will play on either offense or defense. From that point on, playing at both positions on the same day will become the norm.
The Jaguars have already tweaked Travis Hunter’s practice schedule
One change that the Jaguars have made with Hunter’s practice schedule since offseason programs is making sure that whatever side of the ball he practices on during a given day, he is in meetings with the opposite side of the ball once or even twice on that same day.
The purpose behind this new approach is that the Jaguars don’t want him on the practice field on defense, for example, not having been in any meetings the day or two prior.
As they have from the start, the Jaguars will remain fluid with Hunter’s schedule, but as Campanile mentioned, everything is detailed down to the minute, if not the second.
