Fans react to Tyrann Mathieu’s stunning retirement originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The main topic across the NFL this week has been the start of training camp for many teams, with the Houston Texans kicking off their camp on July 23. The start of camp also means we’ve reached the time of year where some players make decisions on the future of their time in football.

Former Texans safety Tyrann Mathieu was one of these players. He announced his retirement from the game on Tuesday afternoon after 12 seasons in the NFL. Mathieu was a member of the Texans in 2018, when the team finished 11-5 and lost to the Indianapolis Colts in the wild-card round. In addition, Mathieu played for the Arizona Cardinals (2013-17), Kansas City Chiefs (2019-21) and the New Orleans Saints (2022-24).

“Honey Badger had an unreal career. Hope he has a great time in retirement,” one user said below an X post announcing Mathieu’s retirement.

“Texans legend,” another commenter said.

Others discussed the Honey Badger’s candidacy for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which he will become eligible for starting in 2030. Mathieu was a three-time AP first-team All-Pro, and his 685 career tackles rank 16th all-time by a defensive back.

“Great human being & One of the greatest Safeties in NFL history, 1st ballot HOF,” one user said.
