Earlier this week, NFL teams were given a new green light to sign free agents. As of Monday afternoon, any new additions won’t count in the formula to determine which teams get compensatory draft selections in the 2026 NFL draft.

So the Jacksonville Jaguars did the Miami Dolphins quite a favor by agreeing to a deal with Emmanuel Ogbah that was officially finalized Monday, just before the deadline.

It wasn’t until Over The Cap revealed details of the contract later in the week that the ramifications of the Jaguars’ favor were unveiled. The one-year, $3.25 million deal is projected to be just enough to count in the compensatory calculations.

Prior to the signing, the Dolphins had three qualifying departures (Jevón Holland, Calais Campbell, and Robert Jones) and three qualifying additions (James Daniels, Zach Wilson, and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine). Those moves were set to cancel out, leaving Miami unlikely to receive a compensatory pick in 2026. But with Ogbah added to the mix, Over The Cap now projects the Dolphins to receive a fourth-round pick as compensation for Holland signing a three-year, $45.3 million deal with the New York Giants.

For the Jaguars, the move made no difference in their 2026 NFL draft outlook. Ogbah was one of seven free agents to receive a deal averaging more than $3 million per year from Jacksonville this spring. Only three of the Jaguars’ exiting free agents got that much. Whether they waited until Tuesday to sign the pass rusher or not, the Jaguars had no shot at receiving a compensatory pick in 2026.

It’s no guarantee that things will work out for the Dolphins, though. The deals Ogbah received was small enough that it may fall below the threshold for a compensatory pick if he doesn’t see the field much in 2025. Miami found itself on the wrong end of a similar situation in 2024 when an injury suffered by Christian Wilkins meant they received a fourth-round pick instead of a third-rounder in the 2025 NFL draft.

It’s possible too that new Dolphins safety Ifeatu Melifonwu plays enough snaps to count as a fourth qualifying addition, which would cancel out the departure of Holland.

For now, though, it looks like the Jaguars may have hooked up the Dolphins with a little extra draft capital for no good reason.
