ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) – It’s the dog days of summer with everyday seemingly hotter than the last, but here in the sports world we’re already thinking about fall… and that’s because football is about to start up.
On Friday night, the Elkhart Lions hosted a “Football Night.”
It was a community event over at Rice Field where incoming high school, middle school and even youth football players participated in on-field activities.
Meanwhile, parents and community members received info about all three levels of play.
It was just a great night of community, and for head coach Travon Curry and the high school program, it’s a great way to build continuity and a sense of cohesion around Elkhart football as a whole.
“We were blessed last year with a lot of support from our community, and that’s Elkhart,” Curry says. “Elkhart is a big community, so I’m just glad that they continue to support us, and that’s what tonight is all about. Not just the Elkhart football program, but recognize our junior high program. Our seventh graders just won the 7-on-7 tournament down at Lafayette Jeff. Recognize our new girls program. Just showcasing all that Elkhart has to offer, but we got a great community and Elkhart always shows up for the people.”
“I’m expecting a lot of wins out of this team, says Maliya Matthews, freshman flag football wide receiver. “We’ve been playing good and having good teamwork.”
“This is my first two months because I just transferred in, and I love the family here,” says junior quarterback Micah Jarrell. “We have a tight brotherhood. The coaches are amazing. They care a lot about us, and it’s just an awesome atmosphere to be in.”
The Elkhart High School varsity football team opens its 2025 regular season at home on Aug. 22 against Concord. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
