When the Chicago Bears selected rookie Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick, many thought there could not only be competition at tight end, but that Cole Kmet’s role would be decreased.

With new head coach Ben Johnson building a creative and high-powered offense for Chicago this season, there’s optimism that not only Kmet and Loveland can work together but also have significant impacts both separately and as a duo.

As a veteran still looking to establish himself as one of the best at his position, Kmet is not taking the addition of Loveland as a slight and sees the opportunity they’ve got together. Earlier this week, Kmet discussed how he feels him and Loveland can work together and why he views the rookie as someone to work with while also breeding competition.

“I think it’s both. I think there’s naturally areas where we’re going to compete with one another just because we’re in the same position and we’re both pass catchers,” Kmet said. “I always feel like despite if you’re a tight end, running back, or wide receiver, we’re all competing with one another for certain roles within the offense. Nowadays they can put you anywhere and so long as you can show the coaches that you can handle certain things, they’re going to put you all over the field.

“There’s aspects of practice that’s competition and then there’s aspects where I think that we’re going to be able to complement each other’s game really well. I’m looking forward to see how that pans out, I’m looking forward to the competition, and I think it’s going to make both of us a lot better. But then, when it comes to the season, it’ll be fun to see how we complement one another on the football field.”

Creating competition between them will only help make Kmet and Loveland better — both as a duo and individually — which should create even more opportunities for the offense. Chicago will have several ways to utilize their passing offense this season, and it’ll be tough to contain both pass catching threats at tight end.
