The Packers practice in full pads for the first time in training camp

Sights and sounds from Monday’s training camp with the Packers in full pads.

Aaron Rodgers got affectionate about training camp in Pittsburgh this weekend.

That’s because it’s back to dorm life for Rodgers, a facet of training camp life that he especially enjoyed partaking in during his time with the Green Bay Packers.

Rodgers chatted with the NFL Network during the first week of training camp, his 21st in the NFL and first with the Steelers from Saint Vincent College, a private college in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

Besides talking about his marriage, Rodgers discussed how he’s loving the experience of being back on a college campus.

“I didn’t know what to expect getting here last Tuesday,” Rodgers, 41, said. “Check into the dorms realizing I was sharing a bathroom and a shower, but man I missed it, I really did.”

Rodgers last stayed in a dorm for training camp in 2019 at St. Norbert College, the Packers‘ former longtime training camp home.

“We did this for 14 years in Green Bay,” Rodgers told Kyle Brandt of the NFL Network. “Shoutout to St. Norbert’s college across town.”

The Packers held training camp at the De Pere university for 62 years from 1957-2019, ending it in 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Packers have not returned since holding all of their practices at Ray Nitschke Field.

In addition to participating in training camp for years at St. Norbert, Rodgers’ connection to the college goes further. Rodgers pledged a St. Norbert fraternity after a student, then a Packers intern, convinced him.

Rodgers said being in the dorms makes a team closer while preparing for a new season.

“There’s no excuse for anybody not to hang out,” Rodgers said. “The night times are real fun when we get done at a reasonable hour unlike back in the day. So we got plenty of time to talk ball and life.

“I’m just enjoying being up here in the Latrobe and the new challenge with the Steelers.”

Who is Aaron Rodgers staying with in his dorm?

That would be new Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf.

Rodgers and Metcalf got to know each other this spring when they worked out together in California. And now they’re growing their bond even more off the field while living in the same living space.

“He knocked on my door,” Metcalf told Pittsburgh reporters of Rodgers. “I thought it was my front door. It was actually my bathroom because we share a bathroom. He was like, ‘Oh, I was hoping it was you.'”

Metcalf added: “Ehh, I didn’t think I was going to have a roommate.”

But the Pro Bowl wide receiver, who was traded in March to the Steelers after six years with the Seattle Seahawks, said “it was a good experience just to see his face and that we could continue conversations outside the building.”

DK Metcalf on how he found out that Aaron Rodgers would be his suitemate at Saint Vincent College:
