VIDEO REPORT: Saints trying to get back to winning ways by winning in the trenches
So we are going to talk about the quarterback competition until we are blue in the face, but one way for this franchise to start winning again in the trenches, especially on the defensive line. Look, they have Chase Young, Carl Granderson, and Cam Jordan, but they have another part of that line that can help them win. Yeah, in the middle, Devon. Ackerman’s native and LSU alum who says he’s proud to be playing all three levels of his career in Louisiana, but he also said he’s ready for the Saints to get back to their winning ways and dominant once again. When you say Deli, you think of tone centers. You think of guys coming to Wrexham shop. Uh, you think of guys coming to make your life *** living H. So just, just really just, uh, setting the tone, and I’m excited to set the tone, uh, the first game. I mean, I know we got more steps to take in training camp to get through it. Against Arizona, I’m excited to set the tone and just to let them know that New Orleans Saints football is back. The Saints trying to get back to their old ways with *** guy who’s said to be very strong. I mean, year 9, so I think it’s kind of some of that old man strength, uh, just kind of just keeping it going up, but just knowing like different techniques of ways just to, uh, just to stay dominant up front, uh, be stout, uh, you know, this team, I, I know they struggled last year in the run game. So *** big part of bringing me and *** couple other guys here to you know stop the run. So I’m excited for it. It’s gonna be *** great season for it to be *** great season. The offensive line needs to stay healthy and live up to their first round potential because after all, 4 of their 5 starters are first rounders. But is that *** benefit for Kelvin Banks and company? You can say it’s *** benefit and not though at the same time because you can have. That status and you can have all that but you gotta go out there and play football at the same time. I mean, uh, uh, the guys are in line we were picked in the first round. They, they believed in us for *** reason so obviously they, they, we have talent and, and, uh, they thought they believed that we had the talent to go out there and do it. So now we just gotta put it all together and go out there and play football. I think Kel Kelvin doing *** good job out there. Uh, he’s not really having no MAs or whatever. It’s really all of us are trying to clean up technique stuff, so. I think Trevor Trevor’s doing *** good job. I think he’s, uh, improving *** lot, especially like I said, he’s in his 3 point stance and he’s coming off the ball. uh, always been *** physical dude, so he’s doing pretty good over there too. And look, Telly SA Fuaga said the vibes are so high right now. It’s the same thing that Jawan Johnson said last week. And *** big reason for that team chemistry. And *** big reason for that, really all of the activities the team is doing together like going bowling, the offensive linemen saying they’re even having movie nights watching things like Grown Ups, Happy Gilmore 2, and Blades of Glory. We will be talking about the New Orleans Saints quarterback battle until we are blue in the face but in order for the Saints to be a consistent winner, they need the guys upfront to be successful.
In the past, the Saints defensive line was amazing against the run and getting to the quarterback, but in the 2024 season they struggled in both of those categories.
The Saints finished second to last in run defense, allowing 141.4 rushing yards per game. They had 39 sacks, which was in the middle of the pack in the NFL.
Those numbers are expected to be much better this season with defensive end Chase Young entering his second season with the team and the addition of former LSU defensive tackle Davon Godchaux.
“When you say d-line you think of tone setters, you think of guys coming to wreck some shop, you think of guys coming to wreck some ‘H’,” Godchaux said.
Success will also fall on the offensive line that has four first rounders: Kelvin Banks Jr., Taliese Fuaga, Cesar Ruiz and Trevor Penning.
But does having that many first round picks benefit the offensive line?
“You can say it’s a benefit and not though at the same time because you can have that status and you can have all that, but you got to go out there and play football at the same time,” Banks said.
Banks has a lot of confidence in the offensive line.
“The guys on the o-line were picked in the first round, they believed in us for a reason so obviously we have talent and they believe that we have the talent to go out there and do it and so now we just got to put it all together and go out there and play football,” Banks said.
The offensive line has built some chemistry by doing movie nights.
