As Indianapolis Colts’ head coach Shane Steichen has said on a few occasions, ultimately, he is looking for consistency at the quarterback position, and whoever can best provide that, Anthony Richardson or Daniel Jones, will be the Week 1 starter.

But what exactly goes into determining who the most consistent quarterback is? Steichen recently provided some insight into what he is looking for in an interview with ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

“I think the operation, the consistency on a day-to-day basis,” Steichen said. “Obviously, knowing the situation, taking care of the football, being smart, and finding completions. We gotta make sure our offense is moving at a high rate up and down the field, and that’s what we’ll be looking for.”

Over the last two training camp practices in particular, both Richardson and Jones have been building momentum and putting together strong showings.

Richardson has been more efficient and showcased better ball placement on the short to intermediate throws, which was a major priority for him during the offseason as he focused on his footwork.

Jones, meanwhile, is getting more comfortable within Steichen’s offense, which came with a learning curve for him, as he told Fowler, and he’s building that chemistry with the pass catchers.

Steichen has said that there is no timetable for when a decision will be made.
