The Atlanta Falcons have moved on from Kirk Cousins as their starter, and yet, they’re not ready to say goodbye.

During the 2024 offseason, the Falcons signed Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract. The veteran quarterback completed 66.9 percent of his passes for 3,508 yards with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions before being benched in favor of Michael Penix Jr.

Cousins opened up about Atlanta’s quarterback controversy during an episode of the Netflix series “Quarterback.” He admit that he felt misled by the front office.

“Certainly, if I had the information around free agency, it certainly would’ve affected my decision,” Cousins said. “I had no reason to leave Minnesota with how much we loved it there if both teams are going to be drafting a quarterback high. But I’ve also learned in 12 years in this league that you’re not entitled to anything. It’s all about being able to earn your spot and prove yourself.”

While there are plenty of fans waiting to see if the Falcons will trade Cousins to a quarterback-needy team, their latest decision indicates their OK with waiting things out.

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris announced Monday that Cousins won’t play in the team’s preseason opener against the Detroit Lions. The same goes for Penix.

It’s a bit bizarre that Cousins is sitting out the preseason opener. If he were to play, he could showcase his skillset to potential suitors – albeit he’d risk injury. Instead, the Falcons are taking a conservative approach to this situation.

We’ll see if the Falcons eventually let Cousins loose this preseason. That is, of course, if he wants to get quality reps in August.
