While nothing has been made official, it appears as if assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will reassume play-calling duties for the New York Giants this season.
From the onset of spring workouts through the first two-plus weeks of training camp, Kafka has handled that role and is expected to be on the headset when the Giants open their preseason against the Buffalo Bills this weekend.

That’s a positive for the Giants after the relationship between Kafka and head coach Brian Daboll appeared to be deteriorating in recent years.
Kafka was reportedly seeking a lateral move away from the Giants last offseason before they retained him with the assistant head coach title, which came on the heels of Daboll stripping him of the play-calling duties in 2024.
Now, with that relationship seemingly on the mend, Daboll has been able to focus his attention elsewhere, while Kafka handles the offense.
“The first couple years I did that,” Daboll said of spreading his attention. “Last year, I kind of handled the scripts and things like that. Mike’s done a fantastic job. We all work together like we have since we’ve been here. But yeah, I’m pretty active in every area, which I need to be. And I’ll continue to do that.”

The Giants were better off with that structure previously, and should be again. As a bonus, Kafka has been gifted an improved quarterback room, allowing him to expand the playbook and take shots down the field.
