After fumbling on the initial possession, New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye responded by rushing into the end zone for the first offensive score of Friday’s preseason game against the Washington Commanders.
Maye’s scrambling ability is one of his greatest strengths. He rushed for 421 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 32.4 rushing yards per game in 13 appearances last season. The second-year quarterback was back to his old tricks on Friday night, seeing the opening in the defense and waltzing into the end zone for a five-yard touchdown.

The touchdown ended an eight-play, 61-yard drive that took just over three minutes.
There weren’t a lot of openings for Maye to attack downfield, but he was patient in taking what the defense gave him on the drive. The Patriots will need more of that patience and execution in the regular season.
