The New York Giants opened up their preseason with a win against the Buffalo Bills, as Brian Daboll deployed all four of his quarterbacks who continue to battle for their place on the depth chartRussell Wilson told Brian Daboll he wanted to play in their preseason opener

Russell Wilson told Brian Daboll that he wanted to play in the New York Giants preseason opener, despite already being named the starting quarterback with three others vying for the spot.

Wilson managed to do what Aaron Rodgers could not, who asked the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach to start, after they lost Will Howard for the preseason. Mike Tomlin declined to use Rodgers in the game, saving his 41-year-old quarterback for the regular season.

And while Daboll would have had some worries, putting his starter out there in a preseason game, it had given the veteran an opportunity to play with his team for the first time – wanting to prove himself as the undisputed starter.

The Giants have four quarterbacks on the roster, with Jameis Winston being brought in to compete with Wilson – likely being the bac-up this year.

When asked about wanting to play in the game Wilson said it was a joint decision with him and Daboll. He said: “Dabs and I were both on the same page. He knew I wanted to play and vice versa. Yeah, he wanted me to play. I was ready to go. I love playing.”

Tommy DeVito remains on the team, going into his third year after impressing in limited performances so far, whilst also showing his limitations.

But all eyes will be on Jaxson Dart, the first-round rookie, who is likely to be redshirted behind Wilson this season – unless they struggle.

Wilson’s play has been on the decline since he left the Seattle Seahawks in one of the biggest trades in NFL history, now being on his fourth team after joining the Giants.

And while Wilson is the starter, he’s his leash isn’t likely to be too long, with Winston and Dart hoping to see the field – both impressing in their preseason opener.

Dart will look to put pressure on Wilson

Wilson being allowed to play in the preseason does somewhat suggest that Daboll wants to see how the competition unfold at the quarterback position.

Meanwhile, Rodgers in the undisputed starter at the Steelers, having lost Howard for the preseason with Mason Rudolph likely to be the back-up.

Rodgers is almost certainly going into his last season in the league, joining up with Tomlin in the hopes of continuing in their incredible winning-season record.
