The Growth of Lamar Jackson

It’s hard to imagine how the two-time MVP can improve during the regular season. Jackson is entering his third season under offensive coordinator Todd Monken, and that is traditionally when a quarterback is fully immersed in his new system.

There is little left for him to prove during the regular season and he will be ultimately judged on what he does in the playoffs. This season will have the highest expectations that Jackson has faced in his career, and the pressure will be on him to deliver when the time comes.

Offensive Line makeup

The offensive line is pretty much set except for the left guard position. In what may be the closest competition in camp, veteran Ben Cleveland is in a battle with Andrew Vorhees. The two both have some starting experience but Cleveland has played in more games over his five-year computer.

Vorhees may have the higher upside. He was once considered one of the top guard prospects in the 2023 draft, but a late knee injury in his final college season derailed his draft status. He did not play at all his rookie season and started three games last year.

Can they extend Tyler Linderbaum?

One of the Ravens biggest questions for the future will be whether they can resign star center Tyler Linderbaum. He was a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and the Ravens declined his fifth-year option that would have paid him $23.4 million, the most ever for a center.

He would most likely command a salary around $20 million per season as the top center currently makes $18 million a year. That may be too much for the Ravens to spend on a center so he may be headed for a franchise tag this offseason.

How does Mark Andrews bounce back?

The Ravens tight end had a disappointing end to last season, and many thought his time in Baltimore had come to an end. Now, the Ravens are happy he is still with the team, especially with Isaiah Likely set to miss the rest of training camp with a foot injury.

Andrews had a good regular season and was one of Jackson’s favorite targets with 11 touchdowns last season, leading all tight ends. He will be called upon early this season and should be looking for redemption after how last season ended for him.

Can rookie Teddye Buchanan end up starting?

Another interesting competition developing is at linebacker between rookie Teddye Buchanan and Trenton Simpson. Simpson was highly-touted coming out of Clemson, but has not lived up yet to his expectations. He went from a starter early on in 2024 to barely getting on the field by the end of the season.

Buchanan has impressed many in just a week of training camp with his strength and instincts. He will push Simpson, who after last season, knows he has to step up to stay on the field. It may take Buchanan a couple of games, but eventually he may take over the starting linebacker spot away from Simpson.

What impact will rookie Mike Green make?

Another standout rookie during the first week of training camp has been Mike Green. The edge rusher fell to the Ravens in the second round this year, and he is showing flashes of why he was considered one of the best pass rushers in the draft.

He will most likely play a pass-rushing specialist role early on, but if he plays enough he could end up near double-digit sacks. He will also push players like David Ojabo and Tavius Robinson for playing time, which could put pressure on them to perform.

Who will win the kicker battle?

The biggest question on the Ravens roster is at the kicker position. They are attempted to replace one of the best ever with a rookie kicker. They drafted Tyler Loop in the sixth round and will give him fist dibs at the spot. He is known for his deep kicks, but in the NFL everyone can boom it from over 50 yards.

Loop will battle with undrafted rookie John Hoyland for the job. If both end up struggling during the rest of camp, the Ravens could be forced to turn to a veteran free agent to come in and help stabilize the position.

Can Zach Orr take the defense to the next level?

The defense took a lot of scrutiny last season, especially early on when they were one of the worst pass defenses in the league. It all turned around at the end of the year when the defense went from a weakness to a strength, and many credit defensive coordinator Zach Orr for making adjustments to his scheme and personnel.

He now has a new-look secondary and a couple new rookie playmakers to add to the mix, and Orr knows he has to improve on last year if this team hopes to get to the next level.

“I think in my first year, you’ve got so much going on in your mind. You’ve got fundamentals; you’ve got scheme, [and] you’re trying to just keep your head above water on all the different responsibilities you have,” Orr said. “So, now I’m used to that, and now I’m just focusing in on the guys [and] building that chemistry together, man, because what’s important. As long as they’re all on the same page, and we continue to drill it and talk about it in the classroom, the better we’re going to be.”

Will this be Todd Monken’s final year in Baltimore?

Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken was a candidate this past offseason for several head coaching jobs, but did not receive an offer. If the Ravens offense has a similar year in 2025, there is a chance that Monken will get a chance to land a head coaching gig.

The sky is the limit for this year’s offense. Monken and Jackson will be together for the third year in a row and that is when a quarterback is normally fully comfortable in a new system. The addition of DeAndre Hopkins and return to form of speedster Keaton Mitchell give Jackson his best set of weapons in his career. Another dynamic Ravens offense should equal a job opportunity for Monken, and he knows Jackson can still grow as a quarterback.

“I think there’s a lot left there for him, in terms of growth. I think he sees the field better now than he did even two years ago. I can’t speak before then. I can just speak to how he sees the field based on what we’re doing offensively and the players that we have and the system. I really do, I think he’s just getting started with his ability,” Monken said.

Is it Super Bowl or bust for this team?

The Lamar Jackson era of the Ravens has been an incredible ride during the regular season, but when it comes to the playoffs, it has been mostly disappointing. They have gotten close the past couple of season, but have not been able to close out close games in the playoffs when they need to.

The pressure will be on the team and head coach John Harbaugh, who is only 3-6 during Jackson’s time, to get over the hump of the AFC Championship and make it back to a Super Bowl. This team has all the pieces in place and if healthy should be a Super Bowl contender by the end of the year. Hopefully they finally find away to take the next step and make it to the franchises third Super Bowl.
