ENGLEWOOD — Lucas Krull could not be more wide open in the end zone.

On Saturday, in a 30-9 preseason road victory over the 49ers, the Broncos tight end scored on an 8-yard completion from quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Krull looked around, pointed his finger at a lack of defenders and shrugged.

“He’s a good target down the field,” coach Sean Payton said this week at Broncos Park for training camp. “He got open on a busted coverage the other night that all of us would’ve been just as happy and open as he was.”

Krull cracked a smile outside the team facility on Tuesday during an interview with The Denver Gazette. Sure, it looked too easy. But the fourth-year pro, who went undrafted out of Pittsburgh, is focused on the process that made it possible.

“You release for the route, you try to identify the coverage they’re in, who is probably going to match to you or who is in that zone,” Krull said. “I saw the corner bite on the in cut and the safety did the same thing. That’s a problem. I knew going out that I was going to be open. Stiddy did an awesome job of going through his progression and finding me in the back of the end zone.”

Krull enters his third season with the Broncos competing for a roster spot in a deep tight end room.

Evan Engram, signed in free agency, is expected to be a major focal point of Denver’s offense with quarterback Bo Nix. Three more tight ends are expected on the 53-man roster among five strong candidates: Nate Adkins, Krull, Caleb Lohner, Caden Prieskorn and Adam Trautman.

Krull has 27 receptions for 247 yards and one touchdown over his last two seasons in Denver.

“He’s not a rookie or a young player anymore, and he’s found some confidence,” Payton said regarding Krull. “It’s been built … with a series of plays. The first play that I can remember two years ago on a critical third down in L.A. against the Chargers. He broke a tackle, converted a first down to keep the drive going and we needed it. So, he’s stacked up a few of those plays.

“I think he’s having a good camp.”

Krull is well known for his pass-catching abilities at 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds. He wants a strong reputation as a blocker, too. That’s why he’s leaned into the advice of tight ends coach Austin King, who previously coached Denver’s offensive line the last two seasons. Krull said that King does “a phenomenal job with us in the run game and has a really good feel.”

Krull also explained what he appreciates most playing for Payton.

“It’s the small details. When you get to the league, there is so much to grasp and learn, and there is a big picture of it, right? But none of that matters if you can’t pick up on the little details,” Krull said. “That’s something that he continuously talks about with us. It’s something I don’t take for granted, because that’s what really counts at the end of the day. … You thought it was good, but you go back and watch the film, and he coaches you up. It’s like: ‘Man, I could have been so much better.’ It’s those little details that is what’s going to bring us to the Super Bowl.”

Krull, 27, has also experienced growth off the field. He recently got engaged and feels settled in Broncos Country.

“I have a beautiful fiancé in Amaya. She’s my rock. I got engaged this summer back in Pittsburgh where we met. It was a beautiful week and we had all of our family and friends there. It was terrific. I got that off my shoulders now, so now we’re ready for the season,” Krull said. “I absolutely love this place. I even told my fiancé: ‘I want to live here forever.’ Because there’s just so much to do here. You’re an hour-and-a-half from the mountains. There’s so much going on downtown. The weather is amazing. It’s so hard to beat. I couldn’t be happier.”
