INDIANAPOLIS (WLUK) — Last week’s preseason opener didn’t exactly go to plan.
The Packers made too many mistakes that they plan to rectify before they lined up against another team this weekend.
A bit of urgency was needed, and the green and gold took another step towards making amends in Thursday’s joint practice against the Colts.
“It wasn’t good enough. Just wasn’t good enough,” said defensive lineman Kenny Clark. “It wasn’t what we were coached to do. It just wasn’t good enough. We had to make a statement today, play our style of football, play fast physical, just play ball.”
“We’ve been going against our offense for I don’t know how long, and we’re getting to the point where Zach knows how I’m setting, Jordan Morgan knows how I’m setting,” said defensive end Rashan Gary. “Going against someone that hasn’t seen me before, and I can work my move and work my craft and actually see the results from it.”
And the results were there for everyone to see. Head coach Matt LaFleur’s group ramped up the intensity in their final practice before another round of game reps — as expectations get clearer ahead of kickoff.
“There’s a lot of areas that we have to improve upon, with some of our core fundamentals,” said LaFleur. “Certainly the holdings up front, and they’ve still taken place in practices since then. I want to see some of that get cleaned up.”
“After last week, we challenged ourselves with a mobile quarterback. You know, containing the pocket,” said defensive end Lukas Van Ness. “I think there was a couple of times where he stepped up and was able to get out of the pocket and get some yards. That’s something that we have to continue to clean up in just containing these quarterbacks.”
“I think it’s just about focusing on the details,” said quarterback Sean Clifford. “There’s just too many M-A’s, missed assignments, across the board. Starting with the quarterbacks. I feel like one mistake over another, you know, it adds up, and that’s what you saw on Saturday last week. Being clean, playing good football, studying the playbook and making sure that we’re coming out hot.”
All of their hard work will be put to the test Saturday afternoon with kickoff against the Colts set for noon CT.
