San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy saw his first preseason action of 2025 on Saturday against the Las Vegas Raiders. Like most of the starters, Purdy played just one series—but he looked sharp. The fourth-year signal-caller completed five of seven passes for 66 yards, leading the 49ers on a 12-play drive that ended with a field goal. He finished with a 100.9 passer rating, showing midseason form.

That was all head coach Kyle Shanahan needed to see. After the opening drive, Purdy’s day was done, with Mac Jones taking over at quarterback.

Purdy had sat out the previous week’s preseason matchup against the Denver Broncos, along with most of the 49ers’ starters.

Now, the question is whether the franchise quarterback will play in the preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers next weekend at Levi’s Stadium. Shanahan isn’t ruling it out.

“We’ll see how this week goes,” Shanahan said. “We’ve got a long week [ahead]. I love that we’ve got three practices in a row for ourselves. Then, we’ll take a day off, and then get ready for the Chargers.

“But we’ll see how this week goes with Brock and with the rest of our starters. We’d love the guys to play, but just gotta measure it out, and how this week goes.”

When asked about Purdy’s performance on the opening drive, Shanahan was pleased.

“I thought it was a good drive,” Shanahan said. “I was happy with those guys. That was the goal, to hopefully have one long drive and get them out. I thought they did a good job.”

Purdy also welcomed the opportunity to knock off some rust and get valuable live reps before the regular season.

“I thought it was awesome, just getting out there in a game situation, and getting ready for a game, third down, getting loud in the environment,” Purdy said. “Those are all things that are tough to actually try to emulate in practice.

“So, to be able to come out here, and be in that moment, and have to look at guys in the huddle, and break the huddle, and be loud with my cadence, and drop back, go through my reads, and make the throw, those are all things that obviously are real, and you’re going to see in the season.

“So, to be able to get that in preseason, and that feel again, felt really good. Obviously, we’ll watch film and try to always find ways to get better, but I thought, overall, it was pretty good.”
