The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that they will play their starters in Sunday’s preseason game vs. the New Orleans Saints.

Particularly on the offensive side of the ball, there is one thing that Liam Coen really needs to see from that unit: a clean operation.

During Thursday’s offense vs. defense scrimmage, the Jaguars‘ offense was plagued by miscues with dropped passes and penalties being far too prevalent.

According to ESPN’s Michael DiRocco, in total, there were 10 penalties on the day–several of which were made by the Jaguars’ offensive line. By DiRocco’s count, he also tallied seven drops by the Jaguars’ pass catchers.

The penalties have specifically been an issue for much of training camp.

Even in last week’s preseason game, where the offense was able to move the ball into field goal range, there were two penalties on that drive alone. In total, the Jaguars were flagged eight times in that game, totaling 49 yards lost.

To a degree, mistakes like these are going to be more common during the preseason, especially the early portion of it. Potentially adding to that is the fact that the Jaguars are implementing a new offensive scheme, and one that is quite robust.

With that said, the important thing is correcting those miscues so one mistake doesn’t turn into multiple. Things aren’t going to get any easier once the regular season arrives.

At the end of the day, penalties, drops, and other errors put the offense in difficult long down-and-distance situations that can be challenging to overcome.

Hopefully, in this regard, progress can be made on Sunday. And if it can, with the talent on this side of the ball coupled with Coen’s scheme, everything else should fall into place.

“It’s just another opportunity for us to get better,” Lawrence said of playing on Sunday. “You gotta take it for what it is and learn from it and watch the tape. You can’t be doom-and-gloom come game time because you had a rough practice. You have to be able to bounce back. We do have to clean the stuff up. Some of the stuff showed up all camp, so we gotta be deliberate in what we do to change it. You gotta do something different in order to get different results.”
