The Minnesota Vikings lost to the New England Patriots 20-12 on Saturday. It was the third day the teams squared off this week, as the Patriots came to Eagan for joint practices.
Because of that, the Vikings starters didn’t play. Mike Vrabel played his starters for a few drives before the reserves came in.
Who were some winners and losers for the Vikings on Saturday?
Minnesota Vikings Preseason Week 2: Winners and losers against PatriotsWinners
Max Brosmer
Brosmer was only 15/27 passing for 156 yards and an interception. But he showed command of the offense, drawing praise from Kevin O’Connell in the 3rd quarter.
The final drive was extended when Brosmer fired completions of 25 and 22 yards. It increasingly feels like he’s a lock to make the active roster.
Myles Price
Price’s impact was felt in the return game. He returned two punts for 33 yards and a kick return for 81 yards.
The undrafted rookie from Indiana had an illegal shift that drew O’Connell’s ire in the 3rd quarter. But the team needs a reliable returner, and after Rondale Moore was lost for the season, Price made a case to handle those duties.
Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins
The fifth-round rookie made a tackle for loss early in the game before forcing Josh Dobbs to make an inaccurate pass on 4th-and-goal.
It was the first time he splashed during the two preseason games, but Ingram-Dawkins got some work with the first-team defense during joint practice this week. If he can have another good game next week against the Titans, Ingram-Dawkins could be a rotational player when the regular season begins.
Losers
Sam Howell
Howell’s game looked even worse after Brosmer played. Howell was 1/5 passing for 13 yards. His worst pass came on an interception that was carelessly heaved into coverage.
The Vikings need to seriously consider an outside option at QB2. Brosmer is too young to be counted on for that role in 2025. A trade or signing feels inevitable.
Lucky Jackson
The season-ending injury to Rondale Moore and the injury sustained Thursday to Jalen Nailor opened the door for one of the Vikings’ receivers to step up in Saturday’s game.
Lucky Jackson has had a solid camp, but he didn’t have a great game on Saturday. He caught one pass for nine yards and dropped a pass on 3rd-and-2 at the end of the first half that forced Minnesota to settle for a punt.
Ty Chandler
Chandler only ran three times for 12 yards, an okay average of four yards per carry.
This has more to do with Zavier Scott continuing to produce when given opportunities. Scott caught three passes for 44 yards, showing comfort in the screen game. He was also given ten carries, although they only went for 28 yards.
It feels like Chandler could still be an option to be cut when rosters are reduced to 53. He had one good block in pass protection on Saturday, but he’ll need to show more consistency and have Scott do less to keep his job.
But Chandler’s main role in 2024 was returning kicks. With Price showing out there as well, Chandler might be viewed as someone whose skillset isn’t versatile enough to keep on the roster.
