The New York Jets struggled to keep pace with the crosstown rival Giants in a 31-12 preseason defeat, but several roster-bubble players managed to flash.
Two pass catchers competing for spots on the 53-man roster stood out to head coach Aaron Glenn, who praised their efforts when speaking to reporters after Saturday night’s loss.
“Two guys that really stuck out to me, B-Smitty [Brandon Smith] did a really good job, and he has been doing a good job in practice also, and I thought [Quentin] Skinner really showed up as well, both of those guys are big guys and they go up there and high-point the ball, and I thought it was a good showing for those guys.”
Smith, 26, spent the 2024 season on the Jets’ practice squad after narrowly missing the 53-man roster despite a strong preseason. Against the Giants, the former Dallas Cowboy caught five passes for 48 yards.
Rookie tight end Mason Taylor called Smith a “baller” when speaking with reporters Saturday.
As for Skinner, the undrafted free agent from Kansas recorded four receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown came on a highlight grab from quarterback Brady Cook, as he laid out in the back of the end zone, bobbled the ball, and secured possession before hitting the ground.
Skinner built a reputation for explosive plays at Kansas, where the former two-star recruit averaged more than 20 yards per catch during the 2024 season.
The Jets may have stumbled against the Giants, but Smith and Skinner strengthened their cases to stick around.
