The Kansas City Chiefs waived rookie running back Elijah Young on Monday, August 18.
A former Missouri Tiger and Western Kentucky Hilltopper, Young signed with the Chiefs as a free agent after the 2025 NFL draft, but was expected to face severe headwinds in his effort to crack Kansas City’s 53-man roster this season.

As a collegian, Young racked up 1,764 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns in 56 games played.
Though he spent three of his five years in the NCAA at Mizzou, Young’s standout 2024 campaign with the Hilltoppers is likely what intrigued the Chiefs’ scouts. Last season, he gained 1,267 yards from scrimmage and scored five touchdowns.
Kansas City’s front office announced its decision to waive Young as part of a series of transactions that saw former first-round pick Felix Anudike-Uzomah placed on the Chiefs’ injured reserve list. The team signed defensive lineman Owen Carney and linebacker Xander Mueller to bring its roster back to full strength.
