The Washington Commanders signed veteran offensive tackle George Fant on Tuesday. The team didn’t announce a corresponding move after signing Fant. That changed on Wednesday when the Commanders revealed they were releasing veteran offensive lineman Julian Good-Jones.

Good-Jones, 28, initially signed with Washington in November from Philadelphia’s practice squad. He appeared in one game for Washington. He was waived during final cuts last summer, but quickly re-signed to the practice squad, where he spent the 2024 season. Good-Jones signed a reserve-futures contract with the Commanders this offseason.

Fant isn’t a direct replacement for Good-Jones. Fant is a tackle, while Good-Jones is a guard. Good-Jones has fallen behind Chris Paul in the battle to be one of Washington’s top interior backups. The Commanders are expected to start Brandon Coleman at left guard and Sam Cosmi at right guard this season. Cosmi tore his ACL in the NFC Divisional Round playoff win over Detroit in January and is nearing a return. Veteran Nick Allegretti is likely to start at right guard in his place.

Andrew Wylie and rookie Josh Conerly Jr. are competing to start at right tackle. Conerly’s recent play gives him the advantage, but the Commanders love Wylie’s leadership and flexibility: He can play either tackle spot or guard. Fant will compete with Tyre Phillips, Bobby Hart and Trent Scott for the final tackle spot on Washington’s 53-man roster.
