If any team knows the importance of depth on the offensive line, it’s the Los Angeles Rams. They’ve dealt with a staggering number of injuries up front in recent years, forcing them to start dozens of different offensive line combinations since 2022.

That’s why they’re so excited about how deep that group runs in 2025. While the Rams know who their five starters will be (when healthy), they have plenty to sort out on the second unit before final roster cuts.

Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur says the Rams’ O-line is “definitely the deepest” it’s been in his three years with the team, but he knows some difficult decisions loom in the coming week.

“There will be difficult decisions. The cool part is that’s above my pay grade, too,” he said Wednesday. “There will be some difficult decisions and that’s what you want across your entire roster. When you do have that, that means you got better depth. In my three years here, I can’t speak before that, but it’s definitely the deepest offensive line that we have had. There are a lot of NFL football players there that are competing for those last spots. You guys know the rigors of this league, 17 games and things are going to happen. Injuries are going to happen. You hope you keep them to a minimum, but you just never know. Those guys just continue to gel and build. Again, theme of the day, but just continue to work on their craft. If their number is called, if they’re a backup, they’re ready to go and fit right in.”

Alaric Jackson, Steve Avila, Coleman Shelton, Kevin Dotson and Rob Havenstein are locked in as the five starters. D.J. Humphries is viewed as the backup left tackle and should Jackson not be ready for Week 1, he’ll be the fill-in starter until Jackson recovers from his blood clots.

David Quessenberry and Warren McClendon Jr. are also competing for reps at offensive tackle, with Beaux Limmer and Justin Dedich penciled in as the interior backups. KT Leveston has also played well in the preseason, as has Wyatt Bowles.

Undrafted rookie Willie Lampkin was one of the standout players in the preseason opener but he’s going to miss a few weeks with ankle and knee injuries, hurting his chances of making the 53-man roster.

The Rams can only keep so many linemen on the team to start the year, which is why it’s going to be such a challenge to trim the roster down next Tuesday. Ideally, they’ll be able to bring back many of the linemen they cut as practice squad players, but the 31 other teams have a say in that. If they like a player released by the Rams, they can claim them off waivers.

As LaFleur said, when you have difficult decisions, it just means you have a lot of talented players on the team. That’s a good problem.
