NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The Saints won’t start a quarterback in consecutive games this preseason.
Second-year player Spencer Rattler will start over rookie Tyler Shough when the Saints take the field Saturday (Aug. 23) at noon on Fox 8, the team confirms.

Even with Rattler getting the start for the final preseason contest, it’s still likely not safe to assume the quarterback competition is over. Still, there’s an indication that Spencer may be gaining traction towards the finish line.

Rattler and Shough’s stats through two weeks remain similar. However, Rattler showed consistency and poise in orchestrating a comeback rally to end week 2 in a 17-17 tie with Jacksonville.
Rattler finished week 2 going 18 for 24 passing with 199 yards. He had a late-game interception but also scored on the game-tying keeper that capped off an 82-yard drive.
In comparison, Shough completed 9 of 12 passes for 66 yards. One of his drives led to a field goal.
Late in the offseason, the Saints are showing a commitment to improve the offense for whoever permanently wins the job. They landed a physical receiver, Devaughn Vele, in a trade with the Broncos for a pair of draft picks. They also traded defensive tackle Khalen Saunders to Jacksonville in exchange for center Luke Fortner. The moves address two glaring areas of need for the Saints offense.
The Saints will take on Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos at home on Fox 8 at noon this Saturday for the final preseason matchup.
The regular season begins Sunday, Sept. 7, with a noon matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.
