EAST RUTHERFORD – The New York Giants spent the first two preseason games testing themselves, playing the starters extensively for the first time of Brian Daboll’s tenure and trying to set the stage for when the results matter beginning Sept. 7 on the road against the Washington Commanders.
Daboll and the Giants eased up some and sat most of the starters for Thursday night’s preseason finale against the New England Patriots, a team they will see in a game that counts come Dec. 1 in Foxborough on “Monday Night Football.”
Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart got his first NFL start and was one of three to throw at least one touchdown for the Giants, joining Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito. The Giants have now scored at least 30 points in each of their three preseason games, finishing off the summer with a 42-10 victory over the Patriots.
They went 3-0 in the preseason for the first time since 2019.
Keep checking back for live updates and analysis throughout the game:
Make that three touchdown passes for Tommy DeVito, who is lighting it up in what might be his final appearance with the Giants. He found tight end Greg Dulcich with 8:22 left, and the former Don Bosco star has now completed 15-of-17 for 184 yards and three scores.
DeVito: he’s a good fella. Yet in a quarterback room with Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston playing well ahead of him, the numbers’ game is working against the former undrafted feel-good story from North Jersey.
I’m not sure Tommy DeVito will get claimed if the Giants ultimately waive him by Tuesday’s NFL-mandated cut down deadline. From a football perspective, he may get a chance to go to someone’s practice squad where he has a better path to the 53.
But ultimately, DeVito elsewhere won’t have the cache off the field that he does here. I don’t think it’s an easy call – for the Giants or for the former Don Bosco star.
Meanwhile, in two series of action, DeVito has completed 10-of-11 passes for 111 yards and two scores, the latest of which came thanks to running back Jonathan Ward, who turned on the jets and took a checkdown to the house 41 yards.
Tommy DeVito has had a solid summer, making most of limited opportunities. It’s hard to envision a spot on the Giants’ 53-man roster, and even then, on the practice squad with team brass opting to keep four quarterbacks.
What happens next for DeVito is anyone’s guess, and if this is the end of his run as a Giant, he’s going to go out in style. He is expected to play the entire second half, and that got off to a good start as the former Don Bosco star completed 6-of-7 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown to rookie tight end Thomas Fidone.
Tough injury for T.J. Moore
That was a gruesome right leg injury for Giants corner T.J. Moore late in the fourth quarter. Entire team came off the sideline. Lifted onto cart by Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston.
Undrafted rookie had a Pick 6 earlier. Difficult to watch.
Cornerback Art Green, defensive lineman D.J. Davidson and undrafted rookie corner O’Donnell Fortune have come out of the gates cooking. Green made consecutive tackles in run support on three consecutive plays in the first half. Davidson is continuing his improved play up front. Fortune had a pair of pass breakups on the Patriots’ field goal drive early in the second quarter.
Another undrafted rookie, Trace Ford, is flashing. It’s going to be tough for Ford to crack the 53, but he is an intriguing developmental prospect.
Jaxson Dart learned a lesson late in the first quarter when, on another free play, he took off running downfield eyeing a big gain. Instead of sliding when two Patriots defenders converged, Dart turned inside and took a big hit, fumbling on the play. New England recovered, but they had been flagged for a defensive holding penalty, so the turnover was negated.
Dart was taken off the field after the concussion spotter called for a medical check. He went to the sideline and into the tent before apparently clearing protocol and returning to the bench.
Jameis Winston replaced him and went up top immediately, finding Jalin Hyatt for 27 yards and a touchdown.
Jaxson Dart, Mr. 201 for the night and the future, marched the Giants into the end zone in 2:01 in his first career start. He made quick work of the Patriots’ backups, finding Gunner Olszewski for 50 yards when New England jumped offsides to give the Giants a free play.
Three plays later, Dart rifled one to tight end Greg Dulcich for a 7-yard touchdown.
