WASHINGTON (7News) — The Washington Commanders are trading running back Brian Robinson Jr. to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2026 6th-round draft pick, per multiple reports.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the trade.
Questions about Robinson’s future with the Commanders have been swirling since reports surfaced a week ago that the team was gauging interest in the running back around the NFL. Since that time Robinson was excused from Washington’s preseason game against the Bengals as well as all practices.
The decision to deal Robinson leaves Washington likely using a rotation at running back. Austin Ekeler is a 9-year veteran, but his days as a workhorse back are probably over. Chris Rodriguez and rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt should see significant playing time for the Commanders this season.
Drafted in the third round of the 2022 draft, Robinson had failed to take a solid hold of the running back job. In his three seasons in Washington, he has never topped 800 rushing yards, and his 8 rushing touchdowns last season were a career high.
