The New York Jets close out their preseason tonight at MetLife Stadium against the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
The finale marks the last chance for players on the roster bubble to prove they belong before cutdown day.
Here are three Jets who must deliver tonight to strengthen their case for a roster spot.
DT Leonard Taylor III (No. 96)
Taylor’s appearance on this list does not reflect his preseason performance. He is tied for the team lead with three defensive stops, and his 68.8 pass-rush grade at Pro Football Focus ranks second among the Jets’ defensive tackles.
Many consider Taylor the team’s second-best interior pass rusher behind All-Pro Quinnen Williams.
However, the recent acquisitions of Jowon Briggs and Harrison Phillips, both roster locks, have created a logjam at defensive tackle. Taylor now finds himself battling Jay Tufele, who has impressed throughout camp, along with several others.
To secure a spot, Taylor must deliver another strong performance against Philadelphia and separate himself from the pack.
CB Jarrick Bernard-Converse (No. 29)
After missing the Jets’ preseason opener, Bernard-Converse delivered a breakout performance against the Giants on Saturday, earning an 87.2 defensive grade from Pro Football Focus. He finished with a team-high three defensive stops, highlighted by a goal-line stand that denied a touchdown, and allowed just one catch for five yards in coverage.
Like Taylor, Bernard-Converse faces steep competition for a roster spot in a crowded secondary. To cement his place, he must replicate the tackling and coverage ability he flashed against the Giants.
Bernard-Converse can also find a path to the roster through his play on special teams, where he logged 110 snaps for the Jets in seven games last season, making five tackles without missing one.
WR Xavier Gipson (No. 3)
After missing most of the Jets’ first two preseason games, Xavier Gipson enters the finale at a disadvantage. Undrafted rookie Jamaal Pritchett has emerged as the frontrunner for the punt return job, the same role that earned Gipson a roster spot over the past two seasons.
With his chances of sticking on the roster slipping, Gipson must prove his value against Philadelphia on both kick and punt returns while capitalizing on any offensive opportunities.
