An old video from Ray Davis’ time in Kentucky has resurfaced online and has gotten folks riled up all over again.
Davis, a star back for the Wildcats in 2023, scored a 24-yard touchdown, racking up 88 yards from scrimmage in a 28-17 win over Eastern Kentucky in September of that year.
Announcer Peter Sousa tried to highlight the struggles Davis overcame as a youngster by referencing his foster care during the game, but perhaps didn’t go about it the way he wanted to.
“Nine months ago when he jumped into the portal, everybody wanted him. Eleven years ago, as a foster kid, really nobody wanted him. And now here he is—found some love, found football, and he’s had an amazing journey,” Sousa said.
The comments drew widespread backlash as fans branded it “disgusting” and “tasteless.”
It’s resurfaced online in a video shared to Twitter/X.
“DISGUSTING THING FOR A BROADCASTER TO SAY ON LIVE TV,” the caption reads.
Peter Sousa later apologized for his comment about Ray Davis’ upbringing.
“It was my intention to shine a light on Ray’s story and to be an advocate for adopting foster kids… I missed the mark,”he confessed. “I could’ve told that story without that line and for that I’m disappointed in myself and I apologize.”
Davis was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 2024 and is currently the backup for James Cook, though he functions in multiple roles, most recently as a kicker in a preseason game.
The player has been open about his childhood, which included times of homelessness and in foster homes.
He has made it clear that he is looking to serve as a beacon of hope for children in foster care.
Meanwhile, the Bills have bolstered their roster with a Super Bowl winner as they look to get over the hump next season.
