The Cowboys received positive news regarding their cornerback position when coach Brian Schottenheimer said on Saturday starter Trevon Diggs will be included on the 53-man roster.

Diggs is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but his progression from knee surgery is allowing the team to include him on the roster with the possibility of him starting the regular-season opener at Philadelphia.

“I think Trevon has been doing a great job,” Schottenheimer said during a conference call. “I’m hoping to get a chance to see him, maybe as early as this week do some stuff. Yes, I’m optimistic, hopefully that’s what we’re trending towards.”

The Cowboys’ next practice is scheduled for Monday and Schottenheimer said there’s a chance Diggs could participate in that session. NFL teams have to reduce their rosters to 53 players by Tuesday.

The question of whether Diggs can get in enough practice time in order to be ready for the opener on Sept. 4 is unknown. The team could place Diggs under limited reps until it feels he’s fully ready to compete in games.

“Anytime you got guys who have missed some time, there’s a ramp-up,” Schottenheimer said. “There’s a buildup period and again we got some time and see how his conditioning is, see how he moves around as we get going. So, hopefully this week you certainly have some dead-period window where you can’t do anything with the guys, league mandated. But again its too early to say. But sometimes guys play a certain amount of pitch counts and things like that. I’m just excited, there’s a good chance he’ll be out there and start competing on the practice field as early as this week.”

The Cowboys have three cornerbacks nursing injuries: Caelen Carson, Josh Butler (PUP) and Shavon Revel (active NFI).

Revel most likely will start the season on the PUP list while Butler and Carson statuses are undetermined, given their recovery from their injuries.

Schottenheimer also noted starting left tackle Tyler Guyton (knee) is improving in his recovery and could also practice next week.

“He’s a little bit like we’re talking about with Trevon,” Schottenheimer said. “I think he’s trending in the right direction and hopefully we can get him out there and doing some stuff on the grass as early as this week.”

Nate Thomas is getting first-team reps at left tackle in training camp practices and in two preseason games. Guyton’s recovery timeline is slated for some point in September.
