The Dallas Cowboys might be missing more than the 12 sacks that Micah Parsons provided last season as they head into the 2025 campaign. One of their top defenders in the defensive backfield is ailing too.

According to ESPN Cowboys insider Todd Archer, Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs remains unsure if he’ll be ready to play in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, which is just 12 days away. Diggs has been on the physically unable to perform list (PUP) and has not practiced.

The good news is that Diggs told Archer and other reporters that he feels “way better than I should feel.” The bad news is that he could only muster a “maybe” on if he’ll be ready to play in Philly.

“Maybe, maybe not,” Diggs said.

Diggs explained that he wants to “practice a lot” and get more reps in before he is more prepared to make a decision on himself for Week 1.

“I want to practice a lot,” Diggs said. “I want to get as much practice as possible, get the game reps in, get the live reps in. I haven’t practiced in a while, so I feel the practice will tell a lot more where I am.”

Diggs suffered a season-ending knee injury in the second half of last season that cost him four games. He needed to undergo a chondral graft surgery this past January after previously undergoing surgery on his ACL in 2023.

Diggs has gone so far as to forego $500,000 in salary just so he could rehab from the injury in his preferred location in Florida.

As for who will be making the final call – Diggs or the team – Diggs said that it would be “a mutual decision.”

“I think it’s a mutual decision,” Diggs said. “If they see something that I don’t see or if I feel something that they don’t know that I feel, it’s going to be that. It’s just about communicating and going out there and seeing what I can do.”

The Cowboys’ top corner

Diggs was a second-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2020 NFL Draft following a solid career at Alabama. After a strong first season in 2020 where he had three interceptions and 14 passes defended, he emerged as one of the league’s top corners in 2021.

During the 2021 season, Diggs recorded a whopping 11 interceptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns while defending 21 passes. Those 11 interceptions were tied for the 14th most interceptions in a single season and were tied for the most by any player since 1980.

For his efforts, Diggs earned Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors. He would make a second Pro Bowl the following year before the injuries started really mounting.

Consequences

Between Diggs’ injury and Micah Parsons’ continued absence due to a contract dispute, it seems increasingly likely that Dallas will be without their top two defenders in Week 1. If that happens, it’s hard to envision a path to victory for the Cowboys against an Eagles team that already enters as Super Bowl favorites.
