Jerry Rice’s attempt to turn back the clock before the San Francisco 49ers’ preseason home game against the Los Angeles Chargers didn’t exactly go as planned.
Widely considered the best wide receiver in NFL history, Jerry Rice spent the majority of his 20-year career with the 49ers (1985 to 2000). Together with star quarterbacks and fellow Hall of Famers and Joe Montana and Steve Young, Rice helped the 49ers to three Super Bowl championships during his illustrious career.
About 80 minutes before kickoff, Rice decided to entertain 49ers fans for old time’s sake by attempting to catch a deep ball down the field. Known for those excellent and reliable hands during his playing career, however, Rice was unable to corral this one:
We’ll give the man a break. He hasn’t played in over two decades and is about to celebrate his 63rd birthday, after all. But hey, the speed is still impressive for a man his age.
Terique Owens, the son of Rice’s former 49ers teammate and Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, caught a 22-yard touchdown in the game. Rice’s son, Brendan Rice, had a seven-yard catch for the Bolts.

Rice wasn’t the fastest wide receiver during his prime years, and he didn’t have the athletic abilities of other greats like Randy Moss, Julio Jones and Calvin Johnson. But it was Rice’s football IQ, work ethic and ultra-reliable hands that helped him enjoy a remarkable 20-year NFL career.
As documented by ESPN, Rice developed reliable hands by working at his father’s bricklayer job, where he had to catch bricks on a scaffold all day.
