KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – It was a night of celebration at the Kauffman Center in downtown Kansas City on Sunday night, as the Chiefs rolled out the red carpet for the premiere of ‘The Kingdom’ on ESPN.
In the very first episode of the docuseries, viewers get a history lesson on how team founder Lamar Hunt helped shape the NFL.
“Those are stories that we know really well, just having heard them directly from my dad,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said on the red carpet. “I’m so glad that those stories are now getting shared with our fanbase.”
“What a great story. And he was a great guy. I had the chance to meet him first way back when I was a head coach in Philadelphia,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. “Just a great human being.”
From history, to action on the gridiron, and even Taylor Swift, the six-part docuseries has it all.
So what are the Chiefs, and the shows’ creators favorite parts?
“Just how it brings our fans, both avid fans who have been here forever, and the brand new fans into the family. And they understand that we really are a family organization, and that’s our culture,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said.
“I think episode two is the most special,” producer Nick Manning said. “Getting to know the Reid family. I sat with Tammy myself and went through all of her scrapbooks, and like through her life, and she gave that up to us. Which wouldn’t have happened without the level of trust that we developed all year.”
Favorites aside, the series, like Sunday night, was above all a celebration of what has become a legendary NFL franchise.
“I felt that personally, of going through all those 2-14 seasons. I remember being at that 670 loop, and pulling over. I was just so distraught after the 2012 year. I thought I don’t know if I can continue to do this,” Voice of the Chiefs Mitch Holthus said. “And then when Coach Reid came it all changed within a week or two.”
