Tuesday is officially cutdown day in the NFL. Teams have a limited time to finalize their rosters. We’re keeping track of any notable names that might be able to help the San Francisco 49ers.
The New York Giants waived 2022 third-round pick Greg Dulcich. The 6’4”, 245-pound receiver caught 33 passes for 411 yards as a rookie with the Denver Broncos, but got the boot last year after Denver brought in a new coach. Dulcich did not catch a pass last season for the New York Giants.
Pass catchers will be the theme here. The Miami Dolphins waived Erik Ezukanma, a fourth-rounder from the 2022 NFL Draft. He has one reception in three seasons.
The New York Jets are waiving Malachi Corley. Robert Saleh knows all about his former third-round pick. He was said to be the next Deebo Samuel. Corley, a rookie last season, had three receptions and two carries for 26 yards in two games.
The name that caught my eye was Trey Palmer. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are reportedly waiving their sixth-round pick from the 2023 class. Palmer is 192 pounds, making it difficult for him to get involved as a blocker in the running game. However, he’s as fast as it gets, and his speed could be of great use in the 49ers’ offense. In 2023, Palmer caught 39 passes for 385 yards.
He had four receptions of 20+ yards. As you might expect, contested catches weren’t his strength, but in an offense that schemes receivers open, Palmer could be a sneaky addition who could start Week 1 for a team banged up at wide receiver.
Kyle’s update, 9:45 a.m. PT: The Washington Commanders are waiving Clelin Ferrell. With Yetur Gross-Matos possibly (likely?) starting the season on the PUP list, Robert Saleh could want a veteran as opposed to one of the UFL pass rushers on the roster.
Terique Owens has been waived, per Matt Maiocco. Owens is expected to make the practice squad if he clears waivers.
Kyle’s update, 10:31 a.m. PT: The Athletic’s Matt Barrows tweeted that CB Dallis Flowers has been cut. Flowers ran with the starters for much of August. However, he gave up multiple explosive plays during the preseason.
Flowers is on a one-year deal. Chase Lucas’s emergence made Flowers expendable. The final roster spot likely came down to Darrell Luter and Flowers. The 49ers have two more years of team control over Darrell Luter. I’ve been vocal about not giving up on Luter’s skill set. We’ll find out whether Luter stays, but his upside and contract may have saved him.
Kyle’s update, 11:00 a.m. PT: Adam Schefter tweeted that the 49ers have released Jeff Wilson, who could also be a practice squad candidate. The 49ers’ top two backs are cemented with Christian McCaffrey and Brian Robinson. Isaac Guerendo and Jordan James are likely the final two backs to make the roster.
Undrafted free agent linebacker Stone Blanton has been waived, per Eric Branch, who says Blanton is expected to make the practice squad.
