MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins have claimed cornerback Julius “JuJu” Brents, a 2023 second-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts out of Kansas State, from the waiver wire.
Brents (6 foot 3, 198 pounds), has appeared in 11 games, starting nine, and has totaled 50 tackles, one interception, six passes defended, one forced fumble and one recovered fumble. Last season he appeared in two games, making one start, and totaled seven tackles. His season ended on Sept. 10 when he was placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury.
Brents played 52 special teams snaps in 2024 and five last season.
Brents will compete for playing time at cornerback behind projected starters Storm Duck, Jack Jones and nickel/slot Jason Marshall Jr. as well as recently-signed Rasul Douglas and Isaiah Johnson. The Dolphins also have cornerback Cam Smith, who is being placed on the non-football injury/illness (NFI) list and Ethan Bonner, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury and could be placed on the injured reserve list.
Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said Wednesday that the Dolphins were probably going to be “aggressive here through the claims here this week, today, too, to hopefully get a couple other players at positions and add them to the roster.”
The Dolphins cornerbacks have been eyed with skepticism, but Grier spoke of them in upbeat terms Wednesday.
“We feel good about that group,” he said. “They’ve competed, they’ve done well all spring and summer battling. A lot of the stuff that we’re working on are not things that they’re going to be doing in regular-season games because you’re not game planning, showing things to teams, so it was good to see them out competing and working and we’ve been very happy with them.”
In other cornerback news the Dolphins plan to add cornerback Cornell Armstrong, who was waived Tuesday, on their 16-player practice squad, according to Armstrong’s agent, Brett Tessler.
Also, cornerback Isaiah Johnson, who got extensive special teams work in the preseason finale against Jacksonville, was waived.
