The San Francisco 49ers are adding more defensive line depth to their practice squad.
According to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, second-year undrafted defensive tackle Evan Anderson cleared waivers and will return to the 49ers’ practice squad. Anderson made the 49ers’ initial 53-man roster, but was let go to make room for fellow DT Jordan Jefferson who the 49ers claimed off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

With San Francisco’s practice squad maxed out at 16 players, there will have to be a corresponding move to clear a spot for Evans. The 49ers’ additions of wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, quarterback Adrian Martinez and running back Sincere McCormick filled up their practice squad group after 13 players were announced Wednesday.
There’s no report yet on which player the 49ers will let go to make room. The 49ers have four WRs on their practice squad. They also have two each defensive end, linebacker, defensive back and offensive line, with one player at defensive tackle, tight end, quarterback and running back.
Anderson went undrafted last year and joined the practice squad after being let go at final cuts. He wound up being promoted to the active roster where he played 267 defensive snaps across 12 games and posted 24 tackles, two tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
With question marks on the interior of the defensive line it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Anderson become a regular part of the defensive line rotation again in his second season.
