The names change, and years pass. Attitudes don’t. The disdain between the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers has existed for nearly three decades, and that animosity will likely carry over into the decades to follow. Through the years, fans and players have fanned the flames. We can still see visions of Ben Roethlisberger’s broken nose.

Patrick Queen has seen this rivalry from both sides, having played his first four seasons with Baltimore after being drafted 28th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. In March 2024, he signed a three-year deal with the Steelers. It isn’t like Baltimore needs any more motivation to circle their annual clashes with their fiercest rival, but the two-time Pro Bowler and 2023 Second-Team All-Pro gave them some anyway, even if he did so indirectly.

Sometimes, it isn’t the ferocity of the blow that provides the knockout punch. Sometimes, it’s the accumulation of punches. Queen left Baltimore a while ago. He’s taken shots at his former team over the years, and even though there seemed to be no malice when asked to compare two head coaches, those who are easily offended might still find some in his latest theory.

Recently, he appeared on the “Not Just Football” podcast with his Steelers teammate, Cameron Heyward. When asked if he’d rather play for Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin or Ravens HC John Harbaugh, he answered with the expected response.

“(I’d rather play for) Coach T for sure. It’s like two different people, but I definitely got a love for both of them; but Coach T is more like, ‘How’s your family’ and the small things that are big to us, and every single day is like that. It’s kinda fun to be able to throw jabs back and forth. He never puts lotion on before practice. He’s always ashy. He always wear the same hoodie, the same shirt, same sunglasses everyday.”

Sure, there’s really nothing wrong with that. He has to ride for his guy, right? Still, this is Patrick Queen, and it’s still hard to forget the jabs that have been thrown over the years. He hasn’t missed many opportunities to twist the knife.

As far as the Harbaugh vs. Tomlin dynamic goes, these two have met on the field at least two times annually since the 2008 NFL season. The Ravens have won two straight head-to-head matchups. The next two are scheduled for Week 14 (December 7) and Week 18 (date to be determined).
