It has not been perfect for the Chicago Bears‘ offense and Caleb Williams in two NFL preseason games. We saw Caleb look special versus Buffalo. Then we saw him struggle mightily versus the Chiefs’ starters in the final preseason game.

Caleb and this Bear offense are pursuing what it takes to be special and put the pieces together. In the latest Bears Wire feature, Mike Pendleton highlights Caleb Williams’ reflections on where the Bears offense stands. Pendleton provides his own thoughts on the Bears’ offense heading into Week 1.

“Williams and the offense struggled in the first quarter of their preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs, where they had back-to-back three-and-outs and pre-snap issues before putting things together in the second quarter. And with the regular season just two weeks away, they’ll have to put in more work under new head coach Ben Johnson to find a rhythm in the new offense. Asked about where he feels the offense is after three preseason games, Williams acknowledged that the team can’t afford to get off to slow starts. But, if they do, they’ll have to end strong like they did on Friday night. Williams didn’t seem content — even after the Bears won the game — and sounded like a starting quarterback who knows he has to do better when the regular season begins.

“We all see what we can be. We all see the flashes – there is often some pretty good moments in practice and in games we’ve had so far,” Williams said. “One of those moments today was the two-minute drive we had before half. Before the drive, being able to talk to the guys, saying to the guys that if we’re ever down in a game, if we ever start slow, being able to understand that and have the self-control and discipline in those moments to be able to go out there and score in two-minute situations, get the ball back in the second half and go out there and score again to have a 14-point swing. There are obviously moments we don’t want, we want to come out and start fast, win the game early on. If those don’t happen, it always seems to come down towards the end of the game. Being able to understand that, being able to have the discipline and self-control that it always comes down to the end of the game – that happened today and the guys did a great job.”

Caleb is tough. He always has the right mentality when things are not going the way he wants. That is a mindset that will carry him far. When he or the offense makes mistakes, he takes control and handles the situation very well in the media.

Caleb knows what is asked of him to make this offense successful. We should trust that he can do it. I believe in Week 1 against the Vikings, we will see more of how he looked versus the Bills rather than how he looked versus the Chiefs.

Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams have both shown they can light up a Brian Flores defense which has made franchise quarterbacks see ghosts. This will be a tough matchup, but how Johnson and Caleb prepare the Bears’ offense should give Chicago reason for optimism.
