After setting their 53-man roster last week, the Denver Broncos built a 17-player practice squad that includes three inside linebackers: Levelle Bailey, Jordan Turner and Garret Wallow.

Broncos veteran Alex Singleton (31) is coming back from last season’s torn ACL, and he’s currently playing with a club after breaking his thumb over the summer. Dre Greenlaw (28) is working his way back from a quad injury, and he suffered a calf injury last fall after returning from an Achilles injury.

So it’s no surprise that Denver loaded up on insurance depth at the position. The team might also consider easing Singleton and Greenlaw back into action as the regular season kicks off this weekend.

“We have to be smart,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said last week. “Alex is coming back off of an injury. Dre is coming back. We have to be smart, and look at pitch counts, and be ready to play some younger players and not just say, ‘Week 1, we’re throwing them out there for 70 plays.'”

Denver can elevate up to two players from the practice squad to the game-day roster in Week 1. One of Bailey or Wallow seems likely to get elevated (with the other elevation expected to go to fullback Adam Prentice). In addition to Singleton and Greenlaw, the Broncos also have Justin Strnad and Karene Reid on the active roster.

Denver is set to host the Tennessee Titans at Empower Field at Mile High on Sept. 7 (view the full schedule).
