Davis Mills is sticking around in Houston through the 2026 NFL season.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Texans are giving their backup quarterback a new one-year, $7 million fully guaranteed deal, keeping him in Houston through next season. This is the second time Houston has given Mills a fully guaranteed deal, though that one was $5 million.
Mills, a former third-round pick out of Stanford and the first pick in the Nick Caserio era, hasn’t started a game since he played in the season finale win over the Indianapolis Colts in January 2023. He hrew for 298 yards and three touchdowns, as well as the game-winning two-point conversion pass to tight end Jordan Akins.
That win gave the Chicago Bears, and later the Carolina Panthers, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. With the No. 2 pick, Houston selected C.J. Stroud as the new fave of the franchise.
Since Stroud’s arrival, it’s been clear he’d be the starter once he won the job over Mills. Over the past two seasons, Stroud has led Houston to back-to-back AFC South titles and divisional-round appearances in the playoffs.
But Mills is well-liked in the locker room and considered a leader in the clubhouse. He’s started 26 games in his career, going 5-20-1 while throwing for 5,802 yards with 33 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.
Since Stroud’s arrival in Houston, Mills has thrown 75 passes for 385 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
“I feel really good about Davis,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “Davis has had the best camp that I’ve seen since he’s been here.”
The Texans play the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at SoFi Stadium.
