The Jacksonville Jaguars released their Week 1 depth chart ahead of their matchup with Carolina, which revealed who the team’s starting offensive line unit would be.

This offseason, GM James Gladstone reshaped this room by making six additions between free agency and the NFL draft. With a number of new faces, there was a lot more versatility among this group and competition, which the Jaguars leaned into throughout offseason programs and training camp.

As the Jaguars searched for their best starting five configuration, they did a lot of mixing and matching, moving players around in order to evaluate all options and combinations before deciding what unit they wanted to roll with this season.

Back in the spring, when we were projecting what the starting lineup for the Jaguars might look like, many thought that Walker Little would be at left tackle, followed by Ezra Cleveland, Robert Hainsey, Patrick Mekari, and Anton Harrison.

Well, that’s exactly how things ended up playing out on the team’s depth chart.

Chuma Edoga will come off the bench and can provide depth at both guard and tackle. Cole Van Lanen is a potential swing tackle candidate, while Wyatt Milum–when healthy–will be another backup guard option, who has tackle experience from his college days.

It sounds like this decision was made not long after the Jaguars’ final preseason game in order to get this starting five steady reps together to continue building that continuity and chemistry–two important elements to offensive line play.

“That’s been the goal for the last 10 days or so, whatever it’s been to have the cohesiveness with those guys,” Liam Coen said this past Monday. “And at the end of the day, those five need to play as a group, as a unit, communicate more than anybody else, and I have been pleased.

“You’re just never sure what you got until you go play a game and people actually have to tackle and tackle the ball carriers and you have to go execute at a high level, snap in and snap out. So, what does that look like? I’ll be able to say a little bit more after Week 1, but I’ve been pleased with their continuity so far.”

Naturally, all eyes will be on Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars’ skill position players, but consistency for any offense begins with the play up front. The offensive line providing time in the pocket and a run game to lean on, especially in Coen’s offense, is a must.
