ENGLEWOOD — The Broncos locker room has selected team captains for the 2025 NFL season.

Safety Talanoa Hufanga, quarterback Bo Nix, defensive tackle D.J. Jones, kicker Wil Lutz, right guard Quinn Meinerz, inside linebacker Alex Singleton, cornerback Pat Surtain and wide receiver Courtland Sutton earned the distinction as voted on by teammates.

It marks the second consecutive honor for Nix. Last season, he became the first Broncos rookie captain since running back Floyd Little in 1967. Nix lived up to the billing with his play. He totaled the most offensive touchdowns (34), passing touchdowns (29) and passing yards (3,775) among NFL rookies last season.

“It’s an honor and it’s something that I will never take for granted,” Nix said after practice Wednesday at Broncos Park. “What makes it more special is you are voted by your peers. … It means a lot that teammates respect me and want to put me in that position. I want to be as good as I can be in that spot and make it worth the pick.”

Meinerz, entering his fifth Broncos season, is now a two-time team captain. He earned first-team All-Pro honors last season after allowing a league-best 3.6% pressure rate and giving up just one sack.

“It means that my teammates have the belief in me to be a voice and be a leader of this team,” Meinerz said. “I’ve never been the big vocal kind of ‘rah-rah’ guy. I’m more of the kind (to) lead by example. So to be voted as captain again … I kind of show up and just do my thing.”

Surtain is also a two-time team captain. The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year ranked first in 2024 with fewest yards allowed (306) and the lowest target rate (10.9%) among cornerbacks with at least 400 coverage snaps.

“It’s a very humbling honor (and) such a prestigious recognition to be recognized as a captain,” Surtain said. “I want to keep on being the best leader, the best teammate I could possibly be each and every year.”

Lutz is another two-time team captain for the Broncos. He made 31-of-34 field goal attempts last season (91.2%) with a long of 55 yards.

Singleton is a back-to-back team captain for the Broncos. He missed the majority of last season with a torn ACL. Singleton was also a captain on the Eagles previously in the NFL career.

Sutton ranks as the most experienced team captain for the Broncos with now five consecutive selections. The seventh-year wide receiver has 379 career receptions for 5,340 yards and 32 touchdowns. Sutton signed a four-year, $92-million contract extension in July.

“I know everybody says that it’s a blessing … but I told the guys at the dinner how grateful I was for them electing me a captain (as) somebody who could go out and be a leader for this team,” Sutton said. “It’s something that I don’t carry lightly. It’s something that I understand the weight that it carries and the responsibilities that come with it.”

Jones and Hufanga are first-time captains with the Broncos. Jones — over three seasons in Denver — has logged 122 total tackles, 9 passes defensed, 5 sacks and 3 fumble recoveries. Hufanga signed in March with the Broncos in free agency.

“I just try to be the same guy every day,” Hufanga told The Denver Gazette. “For me, it was a shock because it’s tough to be a free agent and come in and try to earn the respect of your teammates. … I just try to be the same person every day, lead by example and come in and show up and do my job.”

The Broncos open the 2025 NFL season on Sunday against the Titans at Empower Field at Mile High.
