Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell is as intense as they come.

He’s fiery and ferocious on the sidelines and at the podium. Yes, he’s the one who introduced himself to his fanbase and the NFL by saying his team would “bite a kneecap off.”

But when the 49-year-old is talking about Lambeau Field he gets all warm and fuzzy inside.

“Love Lambeau,” Campbell said Sept. 2 ahead of the Lions’ 2025 season opener on the road against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, Sept. 7. “It’s awesome.”

“That’s one of those places on the eighth day the good Lord made Lambeau,” he added.

Lambeau Field, built in 1957 and named after the team’s founder Curly Lambeau, is as historic as they come. It’s the oldest stadium built specifically to host an NFL team.

Campbell mentioned the iconic Ice Bowl — the famous NFL Championship Game played between the Packers and Dallas Cowboys — at Lambeau Field on Dec. 31, 1967, and all “the history it’s got.”

“It’s got that deep history to it,” Campbell said. “It’s the grass, it’s the elements. It’s just the mystique. It’s awesome. If you love football, you love going to play there. So our guys look forward to it.

“It’s one of those special places to go play.”

Packers vs Lions history

Probably a reason his guys love playing at Lambeau Field is because of all the success they’ve had in Green Bay of late.

Under Campbell, the Lions are 3-1 against the Packers at Lambeau Field and have beat Matt LaFleur’s team three straight years in Green Bay.

Campbell’s only loss to the Packers at Lambeau Field was in his first year at the helm in 2021 when the Lions finished 3-13-1.

Since then, though, the Lions have had the edge. They first kept the Packers from the playoffs in 2022. The underdog, nothing-to-lose Lions topped Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, 20-16, in that season’s finale at Lambeau Field. It wound up being Rodgers’ last game wearing a Packers uniform.

The Lions picked up where they left off when they overwhelmed the Packers early in the 2023 season with a dominant 34-20 victory at Lambeau Field in Week 4 on Sept. 28, part of a memorable season that saw them win their first division championship in 30 years and advance to the NFC Championship Game. Jordan Love and the Packers would get a bit of revenge that season by beating the Lions on Thanksgiving that year, 29-22, at Ford Field.

But Campbell again had LaFleur’s number in 2024, beating the Packers twice, including a 24-14 victory in early November during a rainy day in Green Bay and on a sloppy Lambeau Field. The Lions went on to earn the top seed in the NFC playoffs with a 15-2 record.

The Packers will look to end their losing skid against the Lions to start the 2025 season and will hope Campbell doesn’t have an awesome time he’s grown accustomed to having.

Kickoff is set for 3:25 p.m. Sept. 7.

Packers vs Lions last season

Here are photos from the Packers-Lions season series in 2024. The Packers lost to the Lions both times, first at Lambeau Field, 24-14, in Week 9 on Nov. 3, and then a month later, 34-31, in Week 14 on Dec. 5 at Ford Field on “Thursday Night Football.”
