With the NFL draft in the rearview mirror and rookie minicamps set to begin this week, anticipation for the 2025 season is ramping up—and roster moves are already shaking things up across the league. One significant move came on Thursday.
The Carolina Panthers announced the release of former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney, a standout pass rusher who has made his mark over 11 NFL seasons. Clowney, who was drafted out of South Carolina by the Houston Texans, has built a reputation as a disruptive defensive force.

Throughout his career, Clowney has suited up for six different teams. In fact, he’s played for five different franchises over the past six seasons, frequently switching teams in pursuit of the right fit.
Clowney’s best seasons came during his time with the Houston Texans, where he earned three consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 2015 to 2018. During that span, he recorded six or more sacks and at least 45 tackles each season, establishing himself as one of the league’s most disruptive edge defenders.
Despite being past his prime, Clowney remains a productive veteran pass rusher. With the Panthers focusing on a youth movement and rebuilding both sides of the ball, retaining Clowney didn’t align with their long-term vision.

His release frees up approximately $7.78 million in cap space, though it comes with a financial hit: $6 million in dead cap and a remaining $2 million owed to Clowney.

In 2024, Clowney played in 14 games for Carolina, posting 5.5 sacks, 46 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and 11 quarterback hits. Now 32 years old, he could be a valuable addition for a playoff-contending team in need of veteran pass-rushing depth.
