For Troy Aikman, Netflix’s “America’s Team: A Gambler and His Cowboys” brought back a series of great and not-so-great memories.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback recently joined Sportsradio 96.7 FM/1310 The Ticket (KTCK-AM) to share some of his thoughts on the docuseries, highlighting what he thinks it might have missed. Aikman said one of his key takeaways from the series revolved around what could have been for the Cowboys.
“The biggest thing speaking for Cowboys fans, and even for my former teammates, is what could have been and how silly some of it was that happened that led to our demise in such a short period of time,” Aikman said. “I think we were talented enough. I think we had the right people in place to really have been able to accomplish more than what we were able to do.
“I think some of it was good. I thought there were parts of the documentary that I didn’t feel were quite as accurate as what maybe you would like. But that’s what happens, and is part of it, I suppose.”

The Jerry Jones-themed docuseries focuses on the Cowboys owner’s rise to prominence and the franchise’s Super Bowl success throughout the 1990s. Key figures like Jones, Aikman, Jimmy Johnson, Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith provided commentary on what that time period was like.
While some of the major names shared their thoughts on the ‘90s Cowboys, Aikman felt that the docuseries overlooked a key part of the franchise’s success.
“I think the biggest loss or the thing that wasn’t addressed enough is, the reason we won more than any other reason, is because we had really great players that were solely committed to winning, and we worked harder than anybody else,” Aikman said.
Aikman then credited Johnson’s coaching style, which pushed veteran players to a different level in offseason training activities and training camp.
“We had really hard-working players and at the end of the day, that had as much to do with us winning as anything else,” Aikman said. “And I don’t think that that part of it was probably told the way that many thought that it should have been.”
